2025/2026 Members Newsletters
As presented by Club President, James Law at the AGM 7 June
Star Boating Club is now into its 160th year. We are the 2nd oldest rowing club in the country with the 2nd oldest sports club building. We are happy to report that we remain financially strong and sustainable with plans to upgrade plant and premises that will start soon.
The club relies heavily on a small number of volunteers who continue to devote significant time and effort into keeping things running. Early in the season, the committee had a session to identify at our values and purpose. Once identified, the committee has aligned its decision making with these thematic objectives:
1. People – we want to invest more in our coaches and build a pipeline for future coaches.
2. Community – Build cross school collaboration and participation in events such as the coxswains Durk n Duff.
3. Property – Develop a sustainable capital plan involving rationalising boats and purchasing new ones. A draft of this is being shared with the coaches for their input and we are working on a plan to upgrade the city boat shed to maximise the use of space.
4. Process – We are documenting enduring policy and process that can be consistently followed.
Our membership has remained relatively stable, with a small increase of 8 members this season. Our total members of 196 is made up as follows:
• 15 masters
• 22 adult squad including university students and school leavers

Thanks to all the committee and to Nathan Wallace who remains an integral part of the club despite stepping down from the committee. Nathan is busy building up our adult squad with logistical help from Treena Martin, in addition to the huge contribution she makes in the Treasurer role.
Huge thanks to Gwen Sturgeon, Rowing Director, for all her work over the season with the coaching team. Gwen is a huge asset to the club and is selflessly committed to ensuring all operational aspects of the club run smoothly.
Incidents are reported via the SBC online system and is a standing item at monthly Committee meetings. Thanks to Grant Kiddle for his dedication to ensuring “safety first” and his work to keep our coach boats on the water.
Russel Garlick was successful in securing a grant from NZCT to go towards our new eight and from Grassroots to go towards a new coaching boat. The committee are very grateful for this generous support from these organisations and to Russel for making this happen.
This season, Star had twenty-two coaches responsible for the oversight and development of all our members. The club is grateful for the contribution that coaches make and the huge amount of time and energy they invest in our rowers. None of our results would be possible without our wonderful coaches.
Michele Munro continues her inspiring work as the International Pathway Lead at Rowing NZ.
The Trust has continued to maintain our iconic waterfront building. Over the past year the exterior painting of the building has been completed. We thank the Trust for the investment they have made in the legacy of our club’s building and for keeping a roof over our heads.
Anita Murdoch has continued to keep us up to date with Trust activities as the Trust Secretary.
The club has implemented a new phone app access system for access to the Star boat shed. This makes the administration of access to the boatshed easier to manage for the committee and easier for our members, as well as improving the security of the building.
The club continues to have access to 18 racks and these have been reserved for club owned boats. The facility is managed by the Waimarino Management Committee.
The Development Hub had a strong season with the largest number of participants to date. The hub was run out of Star over the last season, but this may not be the case for the coming season due to our planned storage upgrade in the shed.
Thank you to all our members and coaches for your continuing to support our Club. Thank you for treating each other and our equipment with care. We are looking forward to the 2026/7 season with a new shed refurbishment and the start of implementation of our new boat rationalisation and upgrade program.
